Telcos have been loosing multiple billion dollars in text messaging revenues due to free messaging apps/services like iMessage, BlackBerry Messenger, Skype, WhatsApp, Viber Media, Facebook Messenger and KakaoTalk. Mobile operators are not happy with those apps running freely in their networks, cutting their easy revenue from service like SMS that uses minimal of network resources.

Officially announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012, RCS (Rich Communications Suite) Service branded as joyn by GSMA enables user to do the same sort of Internet-based messaging and voice calls that consumers want without paying separate fees, like file sharing, video calls, Instant messaging. Joyn will be available either embedded as an icon on a smartphone or tablet, or will be accessed via a downloadable app for today’s devices, showing if a person's contact have joyn and online at the moment. Big telco Giants esp Europeans had vowed to implement joyn either with an application downloadable to users in different platform or make available joyn embedded in the smartphone itself. Among which, Spain's Telephonica is the first operator to launch "joyn" RCS service all around Spain choosing WIT software available for download in Spanish Android Market.
GSMA has recently hailed first RCS service "joyn" Interoperability test (IOT) between three operators (Telephonica, Orange and Vodafone in Espanya) to resolvie issues identified during testing and a product to improve user experience.
Equipment manufacturer Giants like Samsung, Blackberry, Nokia, Huawei, LG, Nokia, and ZTE have already joined hands to manufacture more devices having RCS-joyn embedded. Apple is the only one among the top 10 handset maker not to participate in the venture but it seems like it will be compelled to do so later.
Other operators in Germany, Italy, France and Korea have already planned to launch the RCS service joyn.
Though it's not clear how the operators are going to earn the loosing revenues, lets see how the "whatsapp" killer or the OTT (over the top) apps killer grows.
