What is in cell technology that makes Apple new iPhone's Screen thinner?

There are news in the web that Apple new iPhone will employ thinner screen technology which is only be known in a rumored Apple event presumably on September 12. Such thinner screen technology is termed as 'in cell' technology due to presence of touch sensors within the screen itself. Sharp has recently announced the shipment of such thinner display screens to be made this August which also supports the september release of the new iPhone most probably called iPhone-5.

Today's Screen technology can be called 'on cell' as the touch sensors lays on top of the color filters, making a separate layer that adds some thickness to the design. But in an 'in-cell' technology, the touch sensors live inside the color filters, removing the need of extra layer with the integration of touch and image components in the screen.
Here are some advantages/benefits of 'in cell' technology.
  • A thinner iPhone.
  • Improved Screen Display.
  • Reduced Weight.
  • More space for larger battery.
  • Fast Manufacturing.
