Will Jhola get nominated for foreign film Oscar?

This years set a record in submitting highest number of entries (83 countries) to the Best foreign language movie in the 87th Academy Awards (2014). Last year the number was 76. Nepal selected the drama "Jhola"as the official entry to compete in Best foreign Language film at the Oscars. This is the sixth entry from Nepal to the Oscar where the very first one "Himalaya" (Caravan) got the nomination at the 72nd Academy Awards (1999). The movie was directed by French Photographer/Director Eric Valli and got the Oscar foreign film recognition for the adventurous and scenic beauty in mountainous region of Dolpa.

Jhola after getting good reviews in the country, made it to the SAARC film festival 2014, Srilanka with Garima Panta winning the Best actress award. Jhola is based on a shocking story ( story "Jhola" written by Krishna Dharabasi) of the nineteenth century in which a widowed woman had to self immolate on her husband funeral fire to be called a good wife (Sati). Though the movie makers including the director Yadav Kumar Bhattarai are happy for getting such international platform, it is quite uncertain of the movie to make it to the top five films, after two phase of selection ( from nine short listed movie). The movie has not made it to the major film festivals (except SAARC) for wide recognition and there is not even a trailer with English subtitle. But as the movie has such appalling story of the abolished Sati practice, it has created some hype in the international arena, and I believe it may turn out to be a dark horse in this tough race. What I see missing is the film maker's effort to make use of the hype in getting proper support to reach different festivals or even distributors for international screens. We may be unaware of the effort (until the good result) as it is quite tough to get the connections and support for the small budget movie from this part of the world.

Talakjung vs Tulke Movie Review

I have never seen such a strong faith in any Nepali movie director that Nepalis are giving upon Mr. Director Nischal Basnet. The faith he has earned from the people is due to his amazing cinematic work in the blockbuster Loot and they believe his second directorial venture has more to offer than Loot. We need more of such directors for the betterment of Nepali film Industry, and whose story telling shall develop every aspects of film making from technical side to actors to film crew. Here is what his latest has to offer.
TalkJung Vs Tulke is a movie about a poor laborer in a village in the western region who calls himself "BabuSaab" (the royal) but people treat him the exact opposite way. The "good for nothing" character's real name is TalakJung Singh Thakuri but people call him "Tulke" derogatorily. Tulke keeps whining about his greatness and involves in brawl with others for his love "Phuli" and mere issues. The movie takes place in the era when most of the villages in the country are affected with the insurgency and this village is no exception. The protagonist is so naive that he takes armed conflict as an simple task and asks them to mix him in the group without knowing what the armed revolution is all about. He keeps mumbling about taking revenge of the Local feudal "Babusaheb" and his son, who are ruling over the poor laborers but he does not have that courage to stand against, unless he is drunk. In an unexpected turning point, he is forced to evict from the village with his head cross shaved ("Char pate mudera"). TalakJung enters Kathmandu, meets a group of thugs and helps them collect huge sum by intimidating people in the name of fake insurgent groups. The unprecedented encounter of all other members with Police leaves him no choice but to return back to the village that he would have done anyway, to take revenge of his insult. The village now has changed a lot due to the armed conflict. As the revolt in the village leads to a tragic conclusion, the "Good for nothing" TalakJung happens to do the best thing that I think establishes an identity that he was searching for.

The story line is quite simple and inspired by Chinese Novel "The true story of Ahq" that is well molded to Nepali domain by the screenplay writer Khagendra Lamichane who is also the lead actor, playing Tulke. The presentation of the movie is done in a comic style with such grave issue of armed revolution in the background. The movie won't take side for the human killing but the innocent dialogue asking the revolutionist not to kill people ( Krantikari haru lai Munche chahi namara bhande hai!!) gives the reflection of Tulke's mind (who wants to join the revolutionists). Flawless acting from the lead Khagendra Lamichane (Tulke), Richa Sharma (Phuli), Sushank Mainali (Suke), Dayahang Rai and Rabindra Singh Baniya (Binay) is quite remarkable and obvious for the established actors and theater artists. As Khagendra was mostly blindfolded in his first movie Badhshala, this movie proved his acting skills and will definitely get more invitations for new movies. Black beauty Richa Sharma without makeup or probably adding more black in her face, has done full justice to the character. Dayahang Rai and Bikram Singh have no major role in the movie apart from some loot and the item song. The slow paced movie manages to keep people adhere to the screen for almost full time, though there are some sequences that looses the theme and at times even makes you forget Tulke. The eight lakh worth item song "Nachana" is energetic and arouses good feeling in the audiences, but not up to the level of Udreko Choli. Apart from the Paschimi (western region) accents (like Kya arni ho, munche and many more), the movie is also better in putting finer details like radio program of that era, Darpanchaya show in BishwoJoti. Though people have admired the movie as a whole, some people shared the ending could have been better but may be that's the way it ends in the original story. Director Nischal Basnet (Actor Kabaddi) has definitely kept the faith for the people with this dark comedy. I am now wondering if its gonna be "Loot 2" or "Dimag Kharab" that he will start putting into action first.

One additional thing that I appreciate is the initiative in playing the National anthem at the start of the movie. This is a common practice in various part of the world where we even being a foreigner stood to give a respect to the country. This helps to promote the patriotic spirit and should be practiced from the Cinema hall side or the Government itself.

"Shree Panch Ambare" to release this Mangsir.

The movie banner that gave us Antaral - a wonderful cinema that got wide recognition but failed business wise, and denounced to make a movie again, has completed another movie entitled "Shre panch Ambare". Now that the post production is complete, JibanSathi films is all set to promote the movie in every possible ways and has announced the release date to be Mangsir 5. The comedy movie is based on the story of a person that wants to be "King" in the society, which is played by Saugat Malla. Other actors in the movie include Keki Adhikari, Priyanka Karki, Bikram Singh, Yama Buddha, Martin Khan, Raj Godailee etc.
Abhimanyu Nirabi has written the movie who is also the writer of Antaral. Likewise Deepa Basnet is the director of the movie. I have this intuition that this movie will be a promising one (i can tell before watching any trailer) from the story to the actor to the director. Apart from the story, actors and the presentation, the movie pixel quality seems to have improved a lot these days due to use of advanced tools and camera. I expect good viewing experience with this movie due to the use of Red camera.
Here is the first poster released for the movie.

Movie on BP Koirala life.

There has been handful of accounts in Nepali film industry for movies based on the life of political leaders or some remarkable events in Nepalese history. Movies like Bir Ganeshman, Das Dhunga are among those that have created a hype but are not able to be treated as a significant work in Nepali movie industry. They just came and went, without being a stepping stone to further such works in Nepali cinema.
Now it is known that an untitled movie is known to be made on the life of popular Nepali leader and writer Bisheshwor Prasad Koirala ( BP koirala in short). BP Chintan Prasthan is going to produce the movie with a budget of Rs 80 lakh. Chairman of  the chintan pratisthan Haribol Bhattarai inaugurated the shooting of the movie at Sundarijal, marking his death anniversary and the 100th birth anniversary year. The movie is written by Dipendra Dahal and known to feature his personal life, political and literature career, including his relationship with king, other political leaders and not forgetting the democratic struggle he had fought all his life. It is not clear if the movie script has anything to do with his autobiographies Jail Journal and Mero Katha. He was also the first democratically elected prime minister of Nepal, who was soon ousted by King Mahendra after 18 months in office. He had spent several years in exile and jail. He is still believed to be the most influential and patriotic leader of Nepal. His party Nepali Congress, the oldest one is still the major stakeholder in Nepali politics. Though it would be good if all Nepali people follow his path, it would matter in a big way if NC leaders, cadres follow BPs path.

So this movie has huge potential in reaching out to more people to help people know him better and his ideologies but there is a big challenge in giving justice to such renowned persons life. Lets think they must have done enough research before doing this movie to yield good result. My good wishes to the team.

Woda number cha and Cha Ekan Cha

The production team which brought us feeble comedy "Cha Ekan Cha" in the year 2070, is known to make another comedy movie entitled "Woda number cha". Despite the weak presentation, the movie joined the crore club and was one of the blockbuster of the year 2070. Six actors namely Dipak Raj Giri, Shibahari Paudel, Jitu Nepal, Sandip Chetri, Kedar Ghimire and Sitaram Kattel will also be starring in the movie, whereas Director Dinesh DC and Actress Nita Dhungana won't be repeated, as merocinema.com and onlinekhabar reported quoting Dipak Raj.
Nirmal Sharma "Gaida" of comedy serial "Tito Satya" along with Dipak's reel life partner Deepashree Niraula are the helping hands for Dipak to make a "Genuine" comedy movie that is in final stage of writing. With the name itself and the production team, people started speculating if "Wada number cha" is a sequel of Cha Ekan Cha, Dipak clarified the movie not to start from where the previous movie ended.
